The framing sparked immediate pushback, with one widely shared response summarizing the concern:
“[Treating AI agents as employees] disrespects the humanity of your real employees.”
Within days, the company withdrew the feature; not because of technical flaws, but because the message signaled a shift that many interpreted as devaluing human work (SHRM).
Across all three examples, the technology wasn’t the issue.
The messaging was.

What Successful Leaders Do in the First 90 Days
After years of leading high-stakes transformations, I’ve learned that the first 90 days define an organization’s entire AI trajectory.
Not because the technology matures that fast—it doesn’t.
But because employee belief either stabilizes or collapses in that window.
Here’s what the best leaders do differently:
They articulate intent before impact.
Employees can process change when they understand why it’s happening.
They reject change when they sense leadership is hiding the “why.”
They reveal the transition, not just the end state.
Telling people where you’re going is half the work.
Showing them what months 1–3 look like; that’s how trust forms.

In bedrock organizations, purpose matters.
People need to hear how AI strengthens service, accuracy, reliability, safety, or community outcomes.
They present guardrails as clearly as goals.

Every successful transformation I’ve led rests on a disciplined system; one that aligns intent, communication, behavior, and learning.
This is where the structure matters.
Clarity
Understand the true sources of fear. Careers will be disrupted by this technology, job descriptions will change. Recognize that your team is fatigued, tired of living constantly in “change management” mode, tired of uncertainty and moving goalposts. Build clarity on what they are truly afraid of.
Hint: your employees rarely express their real fears out loud.
Vision
Define an AI purpose that is ethical, human-centered, and tied to how the institution serves its community.

Communicate steadily, calmly, and consistently.
