Looking Back: Celebrating Saxum’s History

We’ve been feeling especially reflective around here the last few weeks, as Saxum recently celebrated its 13th anniversary. To commemorate, we’d like to take you on a walk down memory lane to reminisce on a few of our greatest milestones to date.

If you’re not familiar with our early history, you may not know that C. Renzi Stone, our CEO, started Saxum in his living room 13 years ago. He quickly hired his first employee, now Senior Vice President of HR and Operations, Sara Walker. Saxum officially filed as an LLC on July 29, 2003 and by 2004, we added our third employee and first creative team member. As the years flew by, both the team and the client list grew exponentially. In 2006, Saxum joined IPREX, a global network of communication agencies in 33 countries, with 75 partners and more than $200 million in revenue supporting clients worldwide.

Fast forward a few years and Saxum opened an office in Tulsa’s Brady Arts District in April 2010 and our Oklahoma City office moved to our current space in the historic Kirkpatrick building in February 2011. Before we knew it, the demand for integrated services and a one-stop-shop was rapidly growing among our clients and prospective clients, and we made investments to grow our digital team and offerings during the fall of 2012.

As strategic branding is one of the services we offer, Saxum realized the importance of making sure our agency branding is sleek, meaningful and bold. In early 2013, we launched our new brand and committed ourselves to our mantra of “A Better Bold.” Let’s just say, we’ve seen a few looks in our day and I think our current one suits us best by far. See for yourself.

Over the years, Saxum has built an experienced team of energy communication strategists that know how to tell America’s energy story in an effective, sustainable way. Energy is complicated, and in order to help everyone better understand energy realities in America, Saxum created U.S. of Energy, a regional overview of the nation’s energy resources. U.S. of Energy launched in April 2013 and U.S. of Energy 2.0 followed in September 2015. They’re pretty cool, so you should check them out. To further advance our presence in the energy industry and be closer to our growing roster of energy clients, Saxum launched the Houston office in January 2015.

All along the way, Saxum has invested greatly in its internship program and has mentored nearly 150 interns and graduate fellows throughout the life of the company. To date, Saxum has promoted more than 25% percent of interns and fellows to full-time positions (I’m one of them… Hooray!).

Now in 2016, with more than 45 employees, we’re proud to say we’ve been named to the Inc. 5000 list of fastest growing companies for the sixth year in a row as well as the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber’s Metro 50 list for 10 consecutive years. If our history tells us anything of the future, we’re ready to bring on the continued growth. Cheers to the next 13 years!
